Venice Field Notes
In February I also took a side trip to Venice. It was my first time going and it’s been on my list for so long I thought I’d better just knock it out, in case the world ends or something happens, if you know what I mean. Carnivale was in full swing, and the city felt like a living stage: adults in exquisite period costumes gliding through narrow streets, the sound of water everywhere, and light shifting across stone and gold. I ate so much linguine alle vongole I almost tired of it and a gondolier I think overcharged me. But mostly, Venice was pure nourishment for the artist senses - water, light, architecture, gilded interiors. Like stepping into another time.
